Devotional

Let me ask you something honest: how many times have you said you were waiting on God — and God was waiting on you?

That's the thing nobody tells you. You're sitting still, praying for a sign, asking for permission, wondering if you're ready. And the Holy Spirit is sitting right there inside you like, we need to talk. You don't even know what I'm here for.

Here's what I've learned that changed everything for me: we are not waiting for God's approval stamp. He already gave it. The issue is we don't know what's already in our hands.

In John 16, Jesus tells his disciples he's leaving. They're devastated, silent — he literally says they won't even ask him where he's going because they're so caught up in their grief. But Jesus doesn't soften it. He says: it is actually better for you that I go. Because when I leave, I'm sending the Comforter. The Holy Spirit. And He is going to do more for you than I can while I'm standing right here in front of you.

Think about that for a second. Jesus — who healed the blind, raised the dead, walked on water — said it was better that He leave so the Holy Spirit could come. That tells you everything about what the Holy Spirit is carrying for us.

So who is He? He's God. Not a feeling. Not something you catch during Sunday worship. Not evidence you need to speak in tongues to prove. He is the third person of the Trinity — Father, Son, Holy Spirit — the same way you are one person made of soul, spirit, and body. And Ezekiel 36:27 tells us He is within you. Not coming. Already there.

And here's what He's there to do:

He gives you wisdom and understanding — not one without the other (Isaiah 11:2, Ephesians 1:17–20). Solomon had wisdom but struggled to use it. Knowledge without understanding is just information. The Spirit gives you both.

He gives you power — and not just any power. Acts 1:7–8 tells us it's the same power God used to raise Christ from the dead. You carry that. So why are we afraid? Why aren't we moving? That's the question that stopped me cold when I read it.

He gives you guidance — like he gave Moses. God told Moses exactly what to say to Pharaoh, word for word, step by step, day by day. He gave Jeremiah his words before he was even born. He told the apostles not to worry about what to say before rulers — the Holy Spirit would tell them in that moment. He does the same for you.

He gives you truth — and this one is personal to me. John 16:12–15 says the Spirit guides us into all truth. And John 8:44 calls the enemy the father of lies. So here's what I've come to understand: wherever there's confusion, wherever you're spinning in circles and nothing makes sense — there's a lie somewhere. The Holy Spirit is the one who cuts through it and brings clarity.

And when you don't even have words — when you sit down to pray and nothing comes out — He advocates for you. Romans 8:26–27 says the Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words. He takes what's in your heart and brings it to God. You are never alone in prayer, even when you feel speechless.

Here's the part that convicted me most: 1 Thessalonians 5:19 says do not quench the Spirit. Not using Him because you don't know who He is — that's quenching Him. We've been leaving one of our most powerful resources sitting untouched because nobody told us what it actually does.

And one more thing: this isn't just for church. This isn't a coat you put on Sunday and hang up when you leave the parking lot. The Holy Spirit is with you at work, in your relationships, in the decision you need to make this week, in the conversation you're dreading, in the dream you keep putting off. Everything is God's territory.

Everything.

So I'll ask the question I had to ask myself:Now that you know what you're carrying — what are you going to do with it?

  • You have wisdom.

  • You have power.

  • You have truth.

  • You have guidance.

  • You have an advocate before God himself.

You have everything you need to succeed.

The Exodus isn't coming.

You're already in it.

It's time to run.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you been treating the Holy Spirit like a Sunday experience rather than a daily relationship? What would it look like to invite Him into your ordinary, everyday decisions this week?

  1. Where in your life are you spinning in circles or feeling confused? Based on what you've learned about the Spirit and truth — what lie might be underneath that confusion?

  1. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11). Sit with that for a moment. What has fear told you that you can't do — that this truth directly contradicts?

Prayer

Father,

I'll be honest — I didn't fully understand who the Holy Spirit was. I knew the word, I've said it in church, but I don't think I actually knew what I was carrying.

Today, I receive that. I receive that the Spirit is in me — not something I need to earn or catch or prove. I receive that He gives me wisdom, power, truth, guidance, and an advocate before you when I don't have words.

Forgive me for quenching what you've already placed inside me. For waiting for permission you already gave. For letting fear tell me I wasn't prepared when you already equipped me.

Teach me how to walk with the Holy Spirit in the everyday — not just Sunday, not just the big moments, but in all of it. Show me where I've believed a lie where you've already spoken truth. And give me the courage to move.

I'm in an Exodus season. I'm ready to run.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Declarations

Speak these out loud. Let them settle in.

  • The Holy Spirit lives in me — I do not need to earn Him, catch Him, or prove it. He is already here. (Ezekiel 36:27)

  • I carry the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Fear has no authority over that. (Romans 8:11)

  • The Holy Spirit gives me wisdom, understanding, and direction. I am not navigating this alone. (Isaiah 11:2)

  • When I don't have words, the Spirit intercedes for me. I am never without access to God. (Romans 8:26)

  • Wherever confusion exists, truth is available. I will seek the Holy Spirit for clarity instead of spiraling in the lie. (John 16:13)

  • I am prepared. I am equipped. I have everything I need to succeed — and I choose to use it.
